Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)
Dir: Mark Waters
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Emma Stone
It really can’t be a Valentines list without a terrible Matthew McConaughey rom-com taking up at least one space in the countdown but here we are at number 3 with arguably one of his better entries to the day of love.
Using A Christmas Carol as inspiration, the story follows serial womaniser Connor Mead as he’s visited the night before his brothers wedding by apparitions of his past. In true Dickens style, Mead is taken through each stage of his dating life; his embarrassing past, his shallow present and his lovelorn future all laid out on the line just in time for him to realise his true love was the one haunting him all along.
Now, I’m not going to lie – this isn’t the best film and love has been put to screen in much better ways on this list, but every now and then we need a release, a true escape from the drama and what better way to do it than with the master of rom-coms, Matthew McConaughey.
